dealing with disappointment

I’d wager to guess we all deal with disappointment in some form on some level every single day.  Whether its something insignificant or something big, disappointment is just part of our lives.  This week, my biggest disappointment came in the form of my computer.  Breaking.  AGAIN.  I have the very worst luck with my laptop….the cat has spilled water on it and fried it, Jack Jack spilled water on it and fried it a second time, the hard drive failed, a corrupted file shut it down…..you get the idea:) Thank goodness I back up my photos and files and insure my computer!

Here is a picture of it after little hands helped it fall down a flight of stairs…..

Since its my work computer, off it went to the apple genius bar for repairs.  The repair is incredibly expensive, but its still cheaper than buying a new one.  I have been so disappointed to be without a computer for a week.   I was also really disappointed to take money out of our savings (intended for something else) to pay for an unexpected and incredibly frustrating repair…..

This weeks “Life well Lived” question asks,

“How do you deal with disappointment, and what lessons do you have to share from those experiences?”

Dealing with disappointment is definitely one of my weaknesses….in that I don’t deal with it well.  I’ve really been working on how to better handle disappointments that happen, however,  by choosing to look at the bigger picture.  I ask myself: How does this fit into the picture of my life?  Is this something I will feel incredibly disappointed by in a year? in five years?  Is it worth getting so upset over little disappointments?   I have found this mind frame to be incredibly helpful in refocusing my attitude and brushing off little disappointments.  With bigger disappointments I am able to acknowledge that I’m upset/sad/frustrated as a result of being disappointed, and then move on from the feelings and have a positive spirit once more.

how about you?  how do you handle disappointment?  any tips to share?

Oh no! I’m so glad none of your photos were lost, but the lost money that was intended for something else – that hurts. At my best, I can find good in disappointments, then shifting my focus to happier things. At my worst, I withdraw.

Love your idea of asking yourself if you’ll still be incredibly disappointed in a year or in five years. Really helps put things in perspective. I try to remember that everything is in God’s hands and that He has good things in store for us. Lots of prayer is involved :)
